Garcetti beats Greuel in Los Angeles Mayoral Election

2013-05-22 by Melisssa Marschall

Eric Garcetti defeated his competitor, Controller Wendy Greuel, 54% to 46% in a low turnout election to replace current Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The three-term city council member from the Hollywood/Silver Lake district will become the city's first Jewish mayor and the youngest mayor (at 42 years) in more than a century. Despite the low turnout, the campaign was the city's most expensive, with candidates spending about $33 million. An LA Times story suggested that many voters were put off by the negative advertising and that this may have partly explained why so many stayed home on election day. For more see here.
