Long Beach mayoral election could result in first gay mayor

Long Beach native Gerrie Schipske has run for several state political offices since 1988 with minimal success. However, she has been elected by her district to city council in the past two elections. Though she has openly been a lesbian for over 30 years, she has not attempted to pander to gay voters, but instead focused on addressing key policy issues. Despite a landslide win for city council in 2010 and rising popularity, the Democratic Party has abandoned her campaign in favor of a deal among legislators to protect incumbents. Nevertheless, her chances seem strong, and the upcoming election could be a historic moment for the city if voters choose to elect her as its first gay mayor.
