New Jersey town elects first African-American female mayor

The town of Teaneck, New Jersey elected Lizette Parker as the new mayor in early July by a 7-0 vote of sitting council members. Her election is a historical moment for both the town and Bergen County, as Parker is the first African-American female mayor in both jurisdictions. Some town officials see Parker's election as long overdue, as she was the most popular candidate in the municipal election yet was defeated in a council vote in 2010.
